Favourite

I don’t listen to a great deal of radio programs. When I do listen to the radio it’s purely for the music and if I like the celebrity, I will listen to celebrity interviews. A show which covers all of this is on FOX FM every weeknight from 7 pm to 10 pm. It’s called the Hot 30 countdown and is hosted by Tim Lee and Bigsy and it is my favourite radio program. Tim Lee and Bigsy have hosted the hot 30 countdown for roughly 3 to 4 fours years now and deliver it every night around Australia.

When I first heard Bigsy’s voice, I was convinced it was the voice of Ada Nicodemou, who stars as Leah on TV show Home and Away and also known as the winner of season three of dancing with the stars.  Nevertheless I was wrong, infact it was a completely different person who happens to sound very much like her. Tim Lee on the other hand is a character and loves the attention. He gets involved in comical things which attract audiences. Example such as getting caffeine eye drops put in his eyes or doing something else that is ridiculous. The couple behave has if they are brother and sister and it really makes you laugh and want to listen to them communicate with each other more.

The show allows people to vote for their favourite songs online and every night there is a countdown to the number one song. There are celebrity interviews and news segments which are informative and humourous. Every night a listener wins prizes for voting for their favourite song and people are able to call and express what music they like. The show has a positive, relaxing vibe to it and is suitable for all ages, except perhaps for children under 10 years of age. The time of the show is also convenient, when you just want to sit back at night and relax and listen to the radio.

Many people like to listen to the football when they are unable to attend or are not watching it on Television, especially if their football team is playing. Sports commentating is a big job, but commentating an AFL game is a huge job, has our game is very fast paced and unique and if you take your eyes off the ball, it could be at the other end before you know it and this happens when commentators stop talking football and start talking about something irrelevant which really annoys audiences.

I was able to analyze two radio stations commentating AFL football matches. Triple MMM with Gary Lyon, James Brayshaw, Brian Taylor, Danny Frawly and Billy Brownless. Also 3AW with Rex Hunt, Dennis Commetti and Nathan Buckley.  It was quite interesting seeing the difference between how both radio stations called the football.

Triple MMM was reasonably good to listen to, however at times the team decided to talk about random things, James Brayshaw in particular. Earlier in the year when Port Adelaide and St. Kilda were being commentated, towards the end of the game where St. Kilda were 70 odd points up, James Brayshaw and Brian Taylor were talking for far too long on flowers, or shrubs. Despite laughing hysterically for a while, I had second thoughts to whether I was listening to football. The team work well together but for some strange reason find something to argue about amongst each other. When a game goes down to the wire, Brian Taylor is a better commentator to listen to, has he sounds more animated and dramatic and really gets into it and it leaves you breathless and holding on to the edge of your seat.

3AW was also exciting to listen to. Despite Rex Hunt’s recent troubles, I still believe he is by far the funniest and most entertaining person to listen to when calling a football game. The way he puts on a high pitch voice for the fat lady and screams, when a close game is sealed really makes the atmosphere more dramatic and exciting. Rex’s nicknames on players give you a laugh. Thomas the tank engine (Dale Thomas) Tip Rat (Stephen Milne) Missy Higgins (Shaun Higgins) The candlestick maker in baker (Steven Baker) Richo Man (Matthew Richardson) the list goes on. His co commentator however Dennis Commetti is a great commentator with a distinctive voice. He makes very few mistakes and both Hunt and Commetti take in turns respectively with not as many arguments and rambling compared to Triple MMM. Nathan Buckley did well making special comments and observations which really make a good combination thanks to Rex’s humour. Having Brian Taylor and Rex Hunt in the same commentating box would be rather interesting. Both stations called the game reasonably well and gave enough information to their audiences.

Drive

What makes Hamish and Andy tick? It’s a question that a lot of radio listeners would like to know. Especially other radio presenters who look to attract bigger audiences as they try to topple over the class and superior partnership that is Hamish Blake and Andy Lee. Making their break from community radio, Hamish and Andy have become a force on commercial radio where they have dominated ratings in the past couple of years and do not look like surrendering their throne as kings of drive radio any time soon.

Perhaps it is the convenient timeslot from 4pm to 6pm where people are coming home from work and school that attract the big audiences? Or maybe it is Blake and Lee’s sense of humour that young people find appealing and entertaining which win the duo a large number of listeners? It may even well be the fact that Hamish and Andy dare to be different and find ways to make their shows entertaining, touching, joyful and completely hysterical at the same time. When Listening to Hamish and Andy’s drive program, I never feel I need to change stations because dull moments on the Hamish and Andy show are hard to come by and very rare. The pair has different segments which are fun to listen to. Blast from the past will have you hysterical rolling in your seat in laughter. When listening, I felt the partnership and respect the pair have for each other truly remarkable and professional. They barely interrupt each other; go out of their away to offend each other or others. If they do bag someone or something it is usually through a joke and nothing more. In other words they do not try and force their opinions on anyone infact, they express their views on things through humour. The pair are just genuinely nice guys out to show Australia just how passionate they about life and making people laugh.

I also managed to listen to the drive program on NOVA 100 with comedian Ryan Sheldon, Monty aka Katie Diamond who has worked with Ryan on a Saturday Morning show and Wippa aka Michael Wipfli who is becoming more and more of a great radio presenter every year. It was fortunate that these three presenters were put in a team together, has they are all good friends. This was evident when I listened to their show. I felt the connection between the presenters was strong, however not as strong as Hamish and Andy. This may be because it is only the first year NOVA have tried this combination of presenters, as Hamish and Andy have been in partnership for years. Also I felt the music that was being played wasn’t as enjoyable and the segments were not as interesting. Nova’s team however did have a segment where Michael Wipfli was telling a scary story, and he challenged his listeners to ring up to see if they could tell a scarier story. I liked the creativeness in that and I thought it was entertaining. Apart from that the team operated well together even though I felt Ryan made to many stutters. It was a fine performance, but not quite in the same league as Hamish and Andy.
